Your baby is perfect when they arrive here: an ode to in-home sessions

My daughter Lucy is six. Our days are filled with video games, running in our backyard with our two dogs, playing basketball, lounging on the couch watching movies, trips to Disney, and building Legos. We are far removed from her infancy (yet still so early on in her little life). Still, I can close my eyes and return to the newborn days in our home in Orlando, FL.

Newborn days are unique, especially with just one child. The house moves at a slower pace as parents adjust to the new arrival and their schedule of sleeping, eating, and snuggling. The house is a little quieter than usual; the focus shifts from going nonstop to cozying up around the baby and getting to know them. Even in the busiest households, a newborn baby creates a brief pause as mothers recover and acclimate to their new child.

This is why I love in-home newborn sessions. I really enjoy walking into a home filled with that new baby feeling. Sometimes there's daytime TV in the background or soft music. There's a lot of time spent on the couch or in bed. We spend so much of our lives on the go, but new babies demand that we pause.

An in-home newborn photography session is relaxed. We will use one or two rooms that have the most natural light, usually a living area and a bedroom (the nursery or master bedroom are great choices). Windows provide enough light to showcase you and your baby.

The sessions start in mid-morning and are baby-led. In a way, they are more of a documentary-type session. There is some posing, but also photos capturing your life at this moment: snuggles on the couch, older siblings caring for and loving the baby, easy family interactions, and feeding the baby. I come in to document your baby as they are and the new dynamics of your family. I want to partake in the calm quiet of your home, not disrupt it.

I do not use tight swaddles, baskets, or studio props. There's a place in the world for those pictures, and they are cute, but I focus on little feet and hands, family heirloom blankets, and natural, baby-led poses. I deliver galleries that are centered around the real beauty of bringing a new baby into your home without much fuss or frills. Your baby is amazing just as they are.

You have access to all of your diapers, outfits, your own bathroom, and even your cabinet of snacks. Siblings can come and go as they please, and the session can extend for more than an hour as we work around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule.
