My tip is it have everyone trying their outfits in the days days or weeks leading up to the session. This way you aren’t left scrambling at the last minute trying to find shoes that aren’t two sizes too small, or having to adjust everyone’s clothing because the dress you wanted your daughter to wear is too big.
Let’s be honest, mom is normally the one getting everyone dressed and ready to walk out the door, so knowing that the family has their outfits that fit, will give her a few extra minutes to actually spend getting herself ready!

My number one tip before your photo session is don’t over-schedule your day. Especially if you have an evening family photo session with young kiddos, you want to have a relaxing day prior to your session so that everyone isn’t overwhelmed and overstimulated. Try your best to have your littles take their naps, (and push the last one a little later so they can stay up a little later than usual.)
Realistically, your kids probably won’t be in the perfect mood when you show up at your photo session, but keeping the day child-centered by making sure they are well-rested and well-fed will give you the best chance for happy kiddos.

My #1 tip: prioritize relaxation and fun! I know it can feel a bit nerve-wracking before a shoot, but trust me, the magic happens when you're all just being yourselves and enjoying each other's company. So, take a deep breath, let go of any stress, and focus on laughing, playing, and making memories together. When you're relaxed and having fun, it shines through in the photos, creating beautiful and authentic memories for you to cherish forever.

Mommas, plan your outfit first. 98% of the time, it is you seeking out the photo session. You deserve to feel confident and beautiful in your photos! Wear an outfit that you can really move around in and possibly sit on the ground without feeling like you are showing your lady bits. Short dresses or skirts restrict your movement. If you are wearing a dress or a top that can show your bra when you are moving or holding a kiddo, buy a cute lacy bralette that coordinates well with the outfit and it will look stylish and purposeful in photos. After you have the perfect outfit or dress, plan the other family member(s) outfit(s) to coordinate with yours. And getting your hair and makeup done before a photo session is always a nice way to treat yourself.

Make sure that at some point before your photo session, you have a direct conversation with your photographer so you are on the same page for the day. Once you tell her what your hoping for and you know what she needs to make it a successful shoot, then you are all set. Take it easy, let her direct things, and let things unfold as they will. Don't stress if your little one busts out silly dance moves or your the baby's crying steals the spotlight. These spontaneous moments are often the best shots of the day! Remember, family life is beautifully chaotic! Embrace the quirks and let your true selves shine during the shoot. Authenticity will create heartwarming photos.

My tip:
Eat a (NON-MESSY!) snack and listen to good tunes. Whether it's Kidz Bop or Disney or Taylor Swift, whatever puts everyone in a good mood and raises the energy. Taking pictures should be fun, and nothing is fun when the adults or the kids are hungry. Have a granola bar and a karaoke contest in the car and arrive on a high note!
There are a lot of gems in this blog, read it before your next session!
Also, notice a few throughlines: have fun, prioritize mom (we know who’s scheduling these photos, you guys), and be fed. Happy sessions! See you soon!
